I am a self taught artist, born and raised in a small town near Kansas City, MO.
In 2011 my husband and I packed all our belongings and headed West. We traded the intense Midwest winters for the desert heat of Scottsdale, AZ where we currently reside.
A Little About Me:
Ever since I was little I would immerse myself in creative activities. From coloring and drawing to writing short stories and prose. Despite my passion for the arts, it took a backseat to other activities like dance, swim team, theater and that brief stint of believing I could be an astronaut.
Even though I’m an artist, I spent most of my life not being one. I got married at 21 (still married…23 years strong!) In my early 20’s my husband and I started a new business. Our construction company, building custom homes. I also went to school and became a licensed Realtor. I have continued my Real Estate career here in Arizona. Albeit on more of a part time basis. Which affords me the time to make my art.
In my late 30’s after a series of difficult life changes. I felt emotionally lost unable to express how I was feeling. One night unable to sleep, I began opening up boxes from my childhood (you know the ones we all have, stacked to the ceiling in our garage). I unearthed a treasure trove of beautiful things I had created. Stories written, poems, prose and artwork. That night I also found a letter from my high school art teacher. Urging me to pursue my art on a professional level after graduation. It was in that moment, with my childhood surrounding me, I knew I MUST become the artist I had always wanted to be.
From that moment on, I spent every free minute drawing, painting, writing, creating. I used it as an opportunity to put all of the emotions I couldn’t express verbally into a form that helped me grieve and ultimately helped me heal.
I created so many pieces of artwork that my home quickly became a studio. I decided I needed more space. So, with the help of my husband I converted our storage shed in the backyard into my new studio. Which is where I still create today.
As an attempt to clear space, I decided to sell my work online. My first painting I posted on FB someone purchased. I was overwhelmed with excitement. It was a major confidence boost and I haven’t look back since. That was over 4 years ago.
About My Art:
The inspiration for my work comes from a multitude of places, people, emotions, music, color, texture, writings and experiences. I’ve gone through an evolution of sorts with my style. 2019 becoming the year of homecoming for me. My artwork now I believe, reflects the peace I have finally found.
I love working with straight lines and patterns in a geometrical abstract form. My influence has been the modern art movement of bauhaus. Specifically the idea that “the aim of all creative activity is building.” I also love the freedom of creating abstract expressionism and portraits. My art will continue to evolve, just like my life.
I am passionate about art and all things creative. My mind is full of ideas. The most fulfilling thing in my life at the moment is expanding my business and knowing I can be a source of inspiration and kindness for others.
In the words of the great Bob Ross…“I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being able to express yourself to others through painting. Exercising the imagination, experimenting with talents, being creative; these things, to me, are truly the windows to your soul.”
